Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has vowed zero tolerance for mafia-style intimidation in Phuket after receiving complaints from residents and businesses about harassment by criminal gangs and influential groups linked to encroachment on public land along Bang Tao beach.

The prime minister on Sunday travelled to Bang Tao beach in Thalang district to inspect encroachment on public land and illegal structures built along the beachfront.

Speaking to residents and operators, Mr Anutin said the government would not tolerate intimidation by local gangs.

"These people are nothing more than ordinary thugs. Under my government, I will not allow thugs to harass the public," he said.

He said some groups had falsely portrayed themselves as influential figures capable of protecting businesses from authorities in exchange for rent or other payments.

"If they were truly powerful, they would come and face me directly. Instead, they disappear when officials arrive," he said, urging residents to report threats or intimidation to local officials and police.

Mr Anutin warned local authorities against neglecting complaints, saying officials who failed to protect residents could face legal consequences.

He acknowledged many businesses operating on the beach lacked legal land documents, adding all parties needed to be honest if a long-term solution was to be found.

"We will find every possible legal channel to help you continue your livelihoods. But if there is no lawful way, then alternative locations must be found," he said.

Investigations found about six rai of land in the area had no ownership documents and that 34 buildings had been seized for alleged illegal occupation of public land.

Authorities also found 46 structures built without permission, while some businesses were paying monthly rents of up to 150,000 baht to a retired military officer and his wife, who are now under investigation.
