The Department of Internal Trade is further investigating the four-digit price of a crabmeat omelette at a Bangkok Michelin-starred eatery to see if the dish was overpriced, an offence that can carry a jail term.

The department had already fined the owner of Jay Fai eatery for failing to show the 4,000-baht price of its special crabmeat omelette dish on its menus. The action followed a recent complaint from a YouTuber who said its menus showed only a 1,500-baht price for a crabmeat omelette.

The department said the restaurant owner paid a 2,000-baht fine to officials during their visit to the restaurant on Wednesday.

However, the officials were checking the costs of ingredients used at the restaurant to find out if it overcharged customers.

Overcharging carries a jail term of up to seven years and/or a fine of up to 140,000 baht, he said.

Officials ordered the operator to elaborate on the costs of ingredients and seasonings and other costs to determine whether prices at the eatery were reasonable.

Jay Fai is owned and still operated by Supinya “Jay Fai” Junsuta, 82. She won her first Michelin star in 2017 and has retained the award ever since.
