All police stations in Nakhon Ratchasima have been ordered to closely monitor Russian nationals staying in the area, amid concerns they could be mercenaries hired to sabotage military sites and key economic areas of this northeastern province.

Police had received a report that a Russian national had been hired by Cambodia to use drones to attack sites in the province, including the Wing 1 Air Base.

The post asked people who notice any irregularity to tell police immediately.

Nothing suspicious had been found so far.

Police, particularly in Muang district, were monitoring and inspecting hotels, resorts, guesthouses and rental homes. The public were encouraged to report any suspicious people seen in the area. 

Authorities in Korat also reminded people of the ban on flying drones within a 9-kilometre radius of the air base to ensure the safety of aircraft operations.

The Russian embassy later responded to the circulated report, saying it was unfounded and likely made from outside of the region.

The report appeared intended to infringe on the rights of Russians staying in Thailand as tourists or for business purposes and to undermine the long-standing relationship between Russia and Thailand, it said.
