Two young women on a motorcycle crashed into a lowered railway crossing barrier and were then run over by a freight train and killed about an hour before dawn on Sunday in Chon Buri.
Police said the accident at a level crossing in tambon Na Jomtien of Bang Lamung district happened at about 5am.
Police said that two women riding a motorcycle had been killed. One was identified as a young Lao woman, Chinda Suwannalat, 17. The second woman remained unidentified and was severely mutilated.
Train number 4504 was stopped about one kilometre further down the line from the level crossing. Human body parts were seen stuck to the locomotive.
The train driver said he saw something on the track ahead as the train approached and then passed through the crossing. He applied the brakes but it took another kilometre for the heavily loaded train to come to a stop.
A level crossing official said security camera footage showed that after the barriers were lowered the women’s motorcycle had hit one of the arms. Both women fell onto the track and were hit by the train.
