Seven deadly snakes in Thailand and how to spot them

Here are Thailand's
seven venomous snakes:

White-lipped pit viper

  • Bright yellowish-green body
  • Bluish-green hues in some specimens
  • Triangular head
  • Thicker torso compared to the neck
  • White lines along the outer body in males

Banded krait

  • Black and yellow cross-bands
  • Triangular body
  • Black eyes
  • Yellow arrowhead markings on black head

Malayan krait

  • Black and white bands
  • First cross-band connected to the dark head
  • Black-flecked white scales in some specimens
  • Pale yellowish-white bands alternating with black in some specimens

Monocled cobra

  • O-shaped hood marking
  • Yellow, brown, grey, or black body in young specimens
  • Brownish or olive body in adults
  • Black spots beneath the hood
  • One to two dark cross-bars on the belly

King cobra

  • 3–4 metres in length (up to 7 metres)
  • Golden-iris round eyes
  • Large, rounded head
  • Black, greyish-green, or brown body
  • Yellow to nearly white belly
  • Reddish-orange throat

Malayan pit viper

  • Reddish-brown or greyish-brown body
  • Dark brown triangular patterns bordered in white along both sides

Eastern Russell's viper

  • Greyish-brown body
  • Small spots between larger spot rows
  • Triangular head with black arrow-like markings
  • Small, ridged scales
  • Long fangs
