The local pet industry is expected to remain resilient over the long term, as many owners treat their pets as family members. Over the past decade, the sector has recorded strong growth.

In the short term, the war in the Middle East has driven up logistics costs for pet-related products, which may cause some consumers to opt for cheaper pet products, said Watchara Kuneepun, a committee member of the Thai Pet Product Industries Association.

However, the association projects a strong growth path for Thailand's pet industry through 2030.

"If the war lasts only a month, it will not affect this year's growth. But if it drags on, it will hurt all businesses, including the pet sector," he said.

Thais are embracing the global trend of pet humanisation, viewing their pets as family members, said Mr Watchara.

Thais are known for their love of their pets and the generous care they provide, he noted.

In addition, there are more pet-friendly policies across various businesses, including retail spaces, cafes and restaurants.

Items related to cats are the top pet growth category, said Mr Watchara.

Citing data collected by the association from government agencies and private pet-related businesses, he said Thailand was estimated to have 8.7 million dogs last year, up from 6.6 million in 2016.

Meanwhile, the cat population was forecast at 5.5 million last year, up from 2.5 million in 2016.

Pisit Sukanjanachot, the organiser of Thailand Pets Show, said the local pet industry remains resilient. Pets are increasingly becoming companions as more people choose not to have children.

Pet owners continue to buy pet products regardless of economic conditions, and some may not trade down, he noted.

Impact Exhibition Management Co Ltd, in collaboration with the Thai Pet Product Industries Association, last week held the Thailand Cat Lovers Fair 2026, featuring traditional Thai cat competitions, seminars for cat owners and a wide range of cat-related products.

Kunwadee Jintavorn, executive director of Impact Exhibition Management, said the company is considering expanding the event into a Southeast Asian platform under the Thailand Cat Lovers Fair brand.

This initiative would elevate the cat breeding industry, promote Thai cat breeds and support cat-related businesses, she said.
