Idris Elba brings his dance-music alias to Bangkok

Performing as "Idris", the internationally acclaimed DJ and producer Idris Elba brings Sound International to Cloud 11 Theatre for one night only on Sept 26.

Presented by Collective Minds, Sound International x Bangkok will see Idris take control of the dance floor alongside Wildealer and Elaheh, two of the leading voices driving Thailand's fast-growing house scene, bringing their own take on Thai house to the night. The night will be a showcase of Sound International's "never-ending house" ethos, global sounds and local scenes sharing one dance floor.

Long before his success across film and television, music was central to Elba’s creative life. He was introduced to DJing through his uncle, a London sound-system owner who brought him to performances from an early age. As a teenager, Elba divided his time between drama classes and building beats on a Casio keyboard, later balancing acting work with appearances at influential London club nights, including Twice as Nice.

After relocating to New York — a transition that preceded his major acting breakthroughs — he rapidly integrated into the local club scene, crafting genre-bending performances that traversed two-step, funk, reggae, calypso and salsa. These early experiences established the groundwork for Idris, a sonic profile that blends the global sounds of his youth with tech- house, progressive textures and a penchant for experimental rhythms.

As Idris, Elba has performed at some of the world’s most recognised clubs and festivals, including residencies at Pacha, Pikes and Hï Ibiza, as well as appearances at Glastonbury and Coachella. His releases reflect the same instinctive approach to movement and genre. “The Drum", created with South African singer-songwriter Sio, layers amapiano-influenced log drums with distorted piano and subtle drum ’n’ bass elements. On “Fires", a collaboration with singer Fabienne, Idris moves deeper into tech-house territory while revisiting material first heard on his 2015 album Murdah Loves John. 

Named in tribute to his uncle’s sound system, the project connects the full arc of his musical journey, from his childhood introduction to DJing to the international stages he commands today. “I love the sonic spectrum of Afro music,” says Elba of the inspiration behind Sound International. That fascination with percussion, language and the possibilities created when Afro sounds meet electronic music sits at the heart of the label’s identity.

Since launching, Sound International has built its roster around signing and spotlighting music from every corner of the world, with a particular focus on artists shaping their local scenes rather than sounds already dominating the mainstream. Tickets via Megatix.
