Bridge of fantasy

Re: "Land Bridge falls flat", (BP, July 13).

Hats off to the Post for finally, and the only time in my recollection, reporting that the companies that matter will not use the Land Bridge as it saves neither time nor cost. Nor is it economically feasible, as there is an insufficient volume of container traffic, as only 36% of all shipping via the Straits of Malacca can use the proposed bridge. When will politicians who have a duty to the country invest in projects that are market-led, not by vested interests?

Genocide goes on

Re: "Critics slam sanctions on UN expert", (World, July 12).

Israel is Zionist, not Jewish. Zionism was established in late 19th-century Europe as a project to colonise Palestine as a homeland. The flaw in their plan was that Palestine was not "a land without people" as they claimed, but was inhabited, and had been for centuries, by the Palestinians. In 1948, the massacre at Deir Yassin, a Palestinian Arab village that was located just west of Jerusalem, was carried out by Zionists. Yet, they would have us believe annihilation just started on Oct 7, 2023, by Hamas. The genocide in Gaza continues and gains support from the West, with the noble exceptions of Ireland and Spain. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for two senior Israeli officials, Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister, and Yoav Gallant, the former minister of defense, alleging responsibility for war crimes in Gaza. Last week, UN special rapporteur Francesca Albanese issued a report, "From economy of occupation to economy of genocide", which documents the financial tentacles of Israel's ongoing genocide in Gaza.

Weed worries

Re: "Narco status old hat", & "Drug paradise reigns", (PostBag, July 13).

I read a few more comments regarding my views on cannabis shops in Thailand. Taking my once daily walk to the grocery store to get foreign food, I noticed that over 90% of all small businesses on my once major tourist street are "steeled up;" that is to say that they are now permanently closed, four more of them just put up signs in Thai which clearly read "For sale", and the neighborhood looks totally impoverished... but something more was about to happen on my walk home. Passing an alley with my groceries in hand, a young British woman collapsed in the street with a smoking joint in her hand, stoned out of her mind. Since she spoke English, I managed to take her back to her home and made sure she got home safely. She will simply have to sleep off using cannabis recreationally, but she will be okay. To conclude, how many more people are going to get hooked on weed [a narcotic drug] and what sane tourist would want to see the show on my financially ruined, weed-infused tourist street now? ...there are the results of several years of legalised weed.

Quality, not quantity

Re: "Letter limit, please", (PostBag, July 13).

Michael Sim feels that letters published in PostBag are unjustified. Repetitive letters by the same contributor may destroy the PostBag space. To me, the quality and usefulness of letters for readers should be the deciding factor.
