Indonesia's national health insurance scheme, JKN, has become one of Southeast Asia's largest universal-coverage systems. But its current cash-flow pressures reveal a problem that other middle-income countries should watch closely: coverage can expand faster than the financing model supporting it.

BPJS Kesehatan recently said monthly contribution income is around Rp14 trillion (about 26.4 billion baht), while healthcare payments are around Rp16 trillion (30.2 billion baht). A gap of roughly Rp2 trillion (3.77 billion baht) a month has prompted government support of around Rp20 trillion (37.7 billion baht).
