50-plus file camp scam complaints

More than 50 alleged victims have complained to the Consumer Protection Police Division (CPPD), accusing a well-known youth camp organiser of fraud after multiple camps allegedly failed to take place despite parents having paid in full.

Authorities have estimated the total losses at more than 10 million baht.

On Monday, former MP and Santiprachadham Club president Tankhun Jit-isara led a group of affected parents to file a formal complaint with CPPD investigators at the Central Investigation Bureau's complaint centre.

The victims are part of a wider group of more than 50 complainants, including several well-known YouTubers and influencers who asked not to be identified. They are seeking legal action against a prominent youth camp organiser, identified under the pseudonym "Teacher Lek", 45, whose conduct they say may amount to public fraud.

According to Mr Tankhun, the suspect had organised youth camps for more than 15 years and had earned the trust of many parents. However, over the past year, she allegedly continued to take registrations and collect full camp fees, but when the scheduled dates arrived, no camps were held, and no cancellations were announced in advance.

The complaint also alleges that the organiser borrowed money from long-time parents, claiming it was needed for venue payments or citing personal emergencies to gain sympathy. Some parents said they even pawned gold jewellery to lend her money, only to be left unpaid.

The camps advertised a wide range of programmes including science, language and diving. Victims also include unpaid staff and venue owners allegedly owed rental fees.

CPPD investigators have begun questioning complainants and gathering evidence for legal action.
