Much of Thailand is sweltering under a humid heatwave with temperatures touching 40°C as hazardous levels of PM2.5 pollution continue to blanket the North, Northeast and Central Plain.

The Meteorological Department said on Sunday morning that upper Thailand would  experience generally hot to very hot conditions over the next 24 hours, accompanied by hazy skies during the day and the odd thunderstorm.

Conditions are being driven by a heat-induced low-pressure system covering the upper part of the country, along with weak southerly and southwesterly winds. These factors have limited rainfall and reduced air circulation, worsening both heat and pollution levels, the department said.

People are advised to take precautions against extreme heat, including avoiding prolonged outdoor activity and staying hydrated. Residents should also remain alert for isolated thunderstorms.

Air quality continues to deteriorate across the North, Northeast and upper Central Plains, where concentrations of dust and haze have risen above safe levels.

According to the Meteorological Department, poor air circulation combined with a high density of “hotspots”, mainly from seasonal burning, in the northern region and nearby areas has led to the accumulation of fine particulate matter. People are advised to avoid outdoor exposure where possible and wear N95 masks when outside.
