CHON BURI - Animals at Thailand's famed Khao Kheow Open Zoo have been given frozen fruit treats as part of an effort to help them cope with the country’s intense hot weather.
Zoo administrators explained the initiative was introduced to support animal welfare during the current heat, with naturally made fruit ice treats served to boost refreshment, improve hydration and help reduce body temperature.
The frozen fruit has also been designed to encourage natural behaviours. Presented in forms that require effort, strength and scent skills to access, the treats encourage the animals to engage in activities similar to those used for survival in the wild.

Carnivores, including hyenas and tigers, have been provided with frozen meals, while large sprinklers and water basins have been installed for African species such as giraffes and capybaras to help them cool down.
Meanwhile, the zoo’s star pygmy hippo, Moo Deng, has been seen spending much of her time enjoying chilled watermelon to escape the heat.
Overall, the initiative is a reflection of Khao Kheow Open Zoo’s commitment to enhancing animal well being in a way that remains consistent with their natural tendencies.
