A former abbot of Wat Bang Khlan and a former layman have surrendered to Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) police after being accused of embezzlement and using mule accounts in a long-running corruption case.

The former abbot of the temple in Phichit province, and Phon Panpeng, 73, a former layman of the temple, presented themselves to the Anti-Corruption Division to acknowledge charges in a temple corruption investigation.

The case stems from a joint inquiry by the CIB and the Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission, following evidence that proceeds from amulet sales were diverted without being recorded in the temple's accounts and transferred into personal and mule accounts.

The alleged losses exceed 9 million baht, amid internal disputes spanning more than 11 years.

Pol Maj Gen Jruykiat Pankaeo, deputy commissioner of the CIB, said: "The conduct indicates an abuse of official position for personal gain, with a clear financial trail linking those involved."

He added that investigators had gathered sufficient evidence to proceed with prosecution. Both suspects denied all charges, insisting they were not involved in misappropriating temple funds. However, investigators said financial records and supporting evidence remained strong and consistent.

Pol Maj Gen Jruykiat added: "This prosecution aims to restore public trust and return transparency to the temple community, which has been affected for many years."
