The activist group the Network of Students and People for Reform of Thailand (NSPRT) has petitioned the House opposition to investigate the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) over its handling of allegations against former transport minister Saksayam Chidchob.
NSPRT representative Pichit Chaimongkol on Wednesday visited parliament to submit the letter to opposition leader and People's Party leader Natthaphong Ruengpanyawut, Democrat Party list-MP Sathit Wongnongtoey, Seri Ruam Thai Party leader Pol Gen Sereepisuth Temeeyaves and Thai Pakdee Party leader Warong Dechgitvigrom.
Mr Pichit said MPs could use constitutional mechanisms to ask the House speaker to submit the matter to the Supreme Court to establish an independent inquiry panel into the NACC's conduct.
PP deputy leader Dr Wayo Assawarungruang said opposition lawmakers were preparing their own petition and are expected to submit it in early June. He said the NACC's role was to investigate and submit cases to the court, not to make the final judgement.
Once there are grounds for suspicion, the matter should be forwarded to court for a ruling, he said. He also said opposition lawmakers were reviving a separate petition linked to leaked audio involving former House speaker Wan Muhamad Noor Matha, after the earlier request was dropped before parliament was dissolved.
Mr Sathit thanked the group for pushing the issue and said the Democrat Party would also submit a separate petition requesting further review of unresolved issues in Mr Saksayam's case.
Pol Gen Sereepisuth said he supported the move and also urged backing for investigations into the Khao Kradong land dispute case.
