Thousands stranded, Lat Krabang evacuates flooded residents

Rescuers rushed to evacuate bedridden patients, elderly residents and other vulnerable people from a flood-stricken housing estate in Bangkok's Lat Krabang district on Sunday, with floodwaters neck-high in some places.

Teams from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation were assisting people trapped by the severe flooding and helping relocate residents from their homes. One of the hardest hit areas was the Rom Klao public housing estate.

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said he was especially concerned about the Rom Klao community, which has around 30,000 residents.

A temporary shelter was set up at King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang and officials were seeking additional support from the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority and GMC high-clearance military-type trucks to assist in the evacuation. 

City Hall reported  that about 20,000 people remained stranded in the community. About 50 bedridden patients had been evacuated. Rescue teams continued to move vulnerable residents to safer locations.

Officials said most residents remaining in the area still needed emergency assistance, with food and drinking water in short supply.
