The Department of Land Transport (DLT) has dismissed social media reports that it plans to cancel or confiscate lifetime driving licences, insisting that existing holders can continue using them legally.

DLT director-general Sorapong Paitoonphong said on Friday the reports were inaccurate and stressed that there were no plans to revoke lifetime licences.

Holders would retain all their existing legal rights, he said.

The clarification followed comments by Deputy Transport Minister Siripong Angkasakulkiat on Thursday that the DLT was considering reviewing driving licence requirements for older motorists, particularly those aged 55 and above.

Under the proposal, existing licence holders would have to undergo assessments of their physical fitness and driving competence to ensure they could continue using the roads safely.
