Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva said on Sunday night that his party might have about 20 House seats and was ready to be in the opposition.

Mr Abhisit said at party headquarters in Bangkok at 8.40pm that the ongoing vote count showed his party should emerge with about 20 MPs and most of them from the South, the old party's traditional voter base.

The estimate was 11 constituency MPs and 10 from the party list, he said.

“The Democrat Party is ready to be in the opposition in the parliament. A vote of this size (in the House) is suited to being the people’s eyes and ears,” added the 61-year-old former prime minister.
