The Democrat Party on Monday marked its 80th anniversary by kicking off a year-long programme aimed at reinforcing its role as a political institution open to all.
The celebrations on Monday featured religious rites from Thailand's three major traditions and the presentation of "Blue Awards" to former trainees who have made notable contributions to society.
Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva said the anniversary was not merely a reflection on the past, but a milestone for moving forward under the theme of strengthening the party as a political institution for everyone. He reaffirmed the party's long-standing commitment to integrity and outlined a 12-month series of activities. These include the revival of the "Blue House" next month as a public complaints centre.
A "Blue Academy" will be launched in June to train a new generation of political leaders, followed by a "Blue Camp" in July to encourage young members to participate in field activities during the parliamentary recess.
Other initiatives include deploying technology to enhance scrutiny of the national budget, hosting an international liberal forum, and launching a human rights campaign later in the year.
Mr Abhisit said the party will also convene a "people's assembly" in March next year to gather public input to help shape future policy directions.
"The 80th anniversary is not only about looking back. It is a milestone for moving forward. We invite everyone to join us and help build a future for all Thais," he said.
The ceremony was attended by senior party figures and members, while representatives from the Bhumjaithai Party and Palang Pracharath Party were present to offer their congratulations.
Guests were presented with commemorative souvenirs, including amulets of Luang Pho Sothon and Luang Pu Thuat, as well as a sketchbook of the party by Chuan Leekpai.
