The government is accelerating development across the upper northeastern provinces, focusing on agriculture, border trade, transport infrastructure, tourism and drug suppression to boost regional economies.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said the provinces -- Udon Thani, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Loei and Nong Bua Lam Phu -- had distinct economic potential that the government wanted to develop while addressing local needs.
Speaking after a mobile cabinet meeting in Udon Thani on Tuesday, he outlined four priorities: improving agricultural production and product value, expanding border trade and regional economic links, promoting tourism, and tackling drug problems through suppression, prevention and rehabilitation.
In agriculture, the government plans to improve the quality and volume of rice production, promote modern industrial uses for rubber, and develop energy crops such as oil palm, sugar cane and cassava for biofuel production.
The Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation Ministry has been assigned to study setting up food-testing laboratories to improve product standards and competitiveness.
Mr Anutin said the government also wanted to develop the Northeast into a major source of quality food for global markets, while increasing farmers' incomes through food processing and innovation.
To strengthen border trade, the Interior Ministry and the National Economic and Social Development Council will study the feasibility of establishing an additional border economic zone in Bueng Kan, as well as the readiness of a proposed airport there.
The government also plans to improve transport infrastructure and trade facilities to connect the region with neighbouring countries in the Mekong subregion.
Tourism development will build on each province's attractions and identity, with routes linking various destinations to spread income to local communities, he said, adding the Tourism and Sports Ministry will consider further measures.
On narcotics, the police and Interior Ministry will improve databases and apply modern technology to boost enforcement, prevention and cooperation with neighbouring countries.
