Sanya Positioned as Top ‘First Stop in China’ for Thai Tourists

BANGKOK / SANYA, CHINA — Sanya, China’s premier tropical coastal city, is emerging as the leading "First Stop in China" for Thai travellers. Driven by a two-hour direct flight from Bangkok and supported by the mutual visa exemption policy, Sanya offers a seamless, high-value alternative for international beach getaways and cultural exploration.

Strategic Expansion: The Southeast Asia Liaison Office

On March 31, the Sanya Tourism Board hit a major milestone by officially launching its first Southeast Asia Overseas Promotion Liaison Office in Thailand. This move signifies a deeper commitment to the Thai market, aiming to streamline travel services, enhance localised marketing efforts, and solidify bilateral tourism cooperation between the two nations.

Market Dynamics and Growth Insights

The data reflects a significant surge in interest:

  • Rapid Growth: Sanya recorded 197,300 international arrivals in January–February 2026, a 42.97% year-on-year increase.
  • Fastest-Growing Segment: Thai tourists represent one of the most dynamic visitor segments, fueled by increased flight capacity and spontaneous weekend travel trends.
  • Logistical Edge: Direct routes from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport to Sanya Phoenix International Airport are currently operating at near-full capacity during peak seasons.

A Complementary Approach to Tourism

Ma Nan, Deputy Director of the Sanya Tourism Board, emphasises a collaborative rather than competitive mindset:

"We view Thailand as a complementary partner. By leveraging our respective strengths, we aim to co-create novel travel experiences. Our roadmap includes aggressive market penetration through influencer collaborations and integrated marketing in Bangkok.

We are enhancing the consumer journey by highlighting shared culinary heritage, diverse wellness offerings like Traditional Chinese Medicine, and premium leisure activities."

Multi-Tiered Strategic Collaboration

The partnership with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) extends beyond traditional tourism. Siriges-a-nong Trirattanasongpol, Executive Director of East Asia at the TAT, noted: "Our collaboration operates on multiple strategic tiers. We are pivoting toward high-engagement, ‘deep-dive' cultural experiences and tapping into expatriate segments within both nations. This partnership aims to broaden our geographical reach beyond the Bangkok-Sanya corridor, ensuring a wider distribution of economic benefits and long-term industry growth."

The Sanya Experience: Familiarity Meets Innovation

Sanya differentiates itself by blending tropical familiarity with unique Chinese cultural milestones:

  • Cultural Landmarks: The 108-metre Guanyin of the South Sea and Nanshan Cultural Tourism Zone.
  • Luxury & Family Leisure: Home to the world-renowned Atlantis Aquaventure Waterpark and Sanya International Duty-Free City.
  • Digital Convenience: Enhanced international services including widespread credit card acceptance, Thai-language resources, and paperless customs procedures.
