NewSky Commences Operations at Onnut Waste-to-Energy Facility

NewSky Energy (Bangkok) Co., Ltd. (“NewSky”) has commenced full-scale operations at the Onnut Waste-to-Energy Facility, designed to process at least 1,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste per day. Utilising advanced Waste-to-Energy (WtE) technology, the facility converts waste into electricity with a power generation capacity of approximately 35 megawatts. The project incorporates innovative odour management technologies and comprehensive environmental control systems. NewSky is also advancing the establishment of a Waste Management Learning Centre to share knowledge of modern waste management practices with government agencies, private organisations, and the general public. These initiatives are complemented by community development programmes focusing on vocational opportunities, environmental education, and improvements in local quality of life, underscoring NewSky’s commitment to sustainable business growth alongside social and environmental responsibility.

He Ning, Chief Executive Officer of NewSky Energy (Bangkok) Co., Ltd., stated that waste management remains one of the major challenges facing large metropolitan areas, particularly Bangkok, which generates approximately 10,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste daily. The adoption of Waste-to-Energy technology represents an effective alternative for improving the efficiency of municipal solid waste management while creating added value by transforming waste into electricity.

The Onnut Waste-to-Energy Facility has been designed to accommodate a minimum of 1,000 tonnes of waste per day, employing a systematically controlled waste incineration process to generate electricity. The process begins with the reception of municipal solid waste into an enclosed waste storage bunker, which has a storage capacity of approximately 24,000 tonnes. The waste is stored for approximately three to five days to reduce its moisture content before being transferred by overhead cranes into a stoker-type incinerator operating at controlled temperatures of approximately 850–1,100 degrees Celsius.

Heat generated during the combustion process is used to convert water into high-pressure steam, which drives steam turbines connected to electricity generators. Through this process, the facility is capable of generating approximately 35 megawatts of electricity, maximising the beneficial recovery of thermal energy from municipal solid waste.

One of the project's key features is its comprehensive odour management and environmental control system. The waste storage bunker is designed as a fully enclosed system (Closed System) equipped with negative-pressure technology (Negative Pressure System). This system maintains air pressure inside the building at a lower level than the surrounding atmospheric pressure, ensuring that outside air flows inward rather than allowing potentially odorous air to escape into the external environment.

Air from the waste storage bunker is subsequently extracted and directed into the incineration system, where it is utilised in the combustion process at temperatures of approximately 850–1,100 degrees Celsius. This integrated approach helps prevent the dispersion of odours from the waste storage bunker into surrounding areas.

In addition, the facility employs Electronic Nose (E-nose) technology, an advanced odour detection and monitoring system. Utilising a sensor array, the system detects volatile compounds in the air and converts the collected signals into digital data known as an "Odour Fingerprint." These data are subsequently processed using Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to analyse and classify odour characteristics and rapidly assess odour intensity levels.

This technology enables continuous monitoring and surveillance of odour conditions within the waste storage bunker area, strengthening environmental management efficiency and minimising the potential impact on nearby communities.

At the same time, the project places considerable emphasis on transparency and public understanding of its operational processes. The facility is equipped with a central control room, laboratory facilities, and a real-time emissions monitoring display system to facilitate environmental performance monitoring and verification. These measures reflect NewSky’s commitment to integrating advanced technologies with systematic operational management and environmental oversight.

Beyond its core responsibilities in waste management and electricity generation, NewSky places significant importance on community engagement and sustainable local development. Community relations initiatives began even before the commencement of construction, with efforts focused on establishing positive relationships, raising public awareness, and fostering a clear understanding of the project.

Local residents have been encouraged to participate by sharing their opinions, concerns, and suggestions. This feedback has been incorporated into the planning and implementation of preventive and mitigation measures aimed at minimising potential impacts arising from the facility’s operations.

NewSky’s community engagement programmes encompass vocational development, education on proper waste segregation and disposal practices, and support for activities designed to enhance quality of life and strengthen local communities. Particular emphasis is placed on meaningful public participation and maintaining constructive, long-term relationships between the project and surrounding neighbourhoods.

To date, NewSky has actively engaged with and supported more than 120 communities within a five-kilometre radius of the facility, promoting harmonious coexistence and sustainable development alongside local communities.

Most recently, NewSky, together with its affiliated company, C&G Environmental Protection (Thailand) Co., Ltd., led by Chief Executive Officer He Ning and accompanied by senior executives and representatives of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Thailand, presented financial support totalling three million baht to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration.

The contribution was received by Chadchart Sittipunt, Governor of Bangkok, at the Thani Noppharat Building, Bangkok City Hall, Din Daeng. The donation is intended to support flood recovery, prevention, and mitigation efforts across Bangkok, while also providing encouragement and support to personnel working to alleviate public hardship and restore the quality of life of affected residents.

With the opening of the Waste Management Learning Centre, NewSky aims to establish an educational platform for sharing knowledge and expertise in modern waste management technologies. The centre provides opportunities for government agencies, private sector organisations, educational institutions, and members of the public to gain a comprehensive understanding of the Waste-to-Energy process.

Visitors will be able to explore the entire operational process, from waste reception and storage in the waste bunker to the operation of waste-handling cranes, incineration technologies, electricity generation, and environmental control systems. Educational experiences will be delivered through video presentations, three-dimensional models of the power plant, and guided visits to actual operational areas.

Looking ahead, NewSky remains firmly committed to conducting its business in a socially and environmentally responsible manner. The company continues to prioritise the advancement of waste management technologies, the generation of energy from available resources, and active participation in community development.

Through these efforts, NewSky aspires to contribute to the creation of cleaner, safer, and more sustainable cities, where communities can enjoy a better quality of life for generations to come. Because NewSky is Everyone’s Smile.
