Not so standard Sunday roast

Begun as a monthly thing, Sunday Roast at The Standard Grill at The Standard, Bangkok Mahanakhon, now takes place weekly. It's the classic British dining tradition reimagined through a menu rooted in New York, albeit with a Bangkok twist.

The Standard Grill oozes classic American steakhouse vibes with contemporary flair, while its signature "penny-tiled" floor creates a space that feels old school. Many mirrors with rounded corners amplify the natural light coming through the floor-to-ceiling glass walls. It also offers a not-so-standard view overlooking a nearby Chinese cemetery.

The very hearty meal starts with five types of bread: sourdough, baguette, potato bun, multigrain and focaccia. Although they are delicious (especially the potato bun), you should go easy on them in anticipation of many dishes that are coming next.

Next, a trio of salads is served to be shared. Praline peanuts are hidden in peppery Rocket salad for sweet surprises. Covered in a thin blanket of Parmesan, Caesar salad comes with bacon bits, croutons and anchovies tossed throughout. Green salad may sound bland, but it's a delicious medley of broad beans, avocado, green peas and more, with a light, refreshing touch from a lemon-and-olive oil dressing.

There are three side dishes to be enjoyed with your mains: creamy Mashed russet potatoes, smoky Grilled broccolini and asparagus dressed with garlic butter and yuzu ponzu and Mushroom fricassee containing a meaty trio of champignon, eryngi and shimeji.

Smoked salmon crudo piques your appetite with a refreshing, savoury and salty sensation before five mains for sharing are served.

Served on salsa verde, the Porchetta impresses with audibly crispy pork belly mixed with herbs. Served medium rare, Roasted black Angus picanha is dressed with savoury gravy and a touch of peppercorn. Another dish you can really sink your teeth into is Grilled lamb on skewers served with mint salsa. Roasted Khlong Phai free-range chicken is moist and evenly cooked. Roasted vegetables feature pumpkin, shallot, baby carrot, cherry tomato and tzatziki sauce.

Do save some room for two indulging desserts for sharing: Chocolate pudding cake served à la mode with Hokkaido milk ice cream and Butterscotch tart with minimal crust but maximum filling.

Needless to say, you'd better bring a big appetite to this Sunday roast and if you want to indulge further, there's an optional drink package featuring a selection of cocktails, wines, beers and more.
