Speed confusion
I am not sure if I am in the minority who now resorts to a mapping app with speed limit warnings to help monitor my speed when driving on Thailand's country roads to ensure I comply with the speed limit and avoid a fine.
I don't mean to override the speedometer or cruise control in my car, as they both function extremely well. Simply, when I am driving in the country, as an example and observe a mix of varying speed signs on the same stretch of straight road in mixed repeated forms, confusion can commence.
Is it 80, 90, is it 100, or is it 120 km/h? Hence the question to "brake or not to brake!!!"

Why I read
Re: "When a sprinkler raises its head", (Sport, Jan 11) & "Shah controversy", (PostBag, Jan 14).
The Bangkok Post is my go-to for business, cultural events, Sports, and world news, as its coverage is dependable and reliable. This is not always the case with fast, quick reads offered on the internet and elsewhere, for sure.
Now, Brett Brasier's golfing column "Lost Balls" has provided little help with my own hacking efforts. However, it must be understood that no part of the golf swing is natural to us. Every aspect, from stance, grip and swing, has to be learned from scratch. Having taken that in, best get an instructor like Brett and go practise a few thousand or more times.
Also, Miro King wrote in PostBag that the Iranian people are calling for the restoration of the former Shah family regime, but we should realise that so many of these brave protestors were not even born during that regime's time over 45 years ago; these folk will more than likely know nothing of the despicable part that royal family played in Iran's history. Lastly, I can only applaud Jerry Feldman's opinion of the wearisome and annoying contributors.

Thai stocks pay
Re: "Thai election, bank earnings in spotlight", (Stock Focus, Jan 17).
In 2025, Thai listed companies paid an absolute record total of 651 billion baht in dividends, an increase of just about 10% compared to 2024.
Considering it's the firm baht currency, increasing even versus the Swiss Franc lately, and up 9.8% versus the US$ over the past year, shows how high dividend Thai stock investing here has solid merits. Not least, Thailand ranks globally among the lowest reported inflation, ie, in fact, slightly negative inflation for many quarters already.

Claims need proof
Re: "Jade warns charter rewrite is a 'trap'", (BP, Jan 18).
Jade Donavanik, the Rak Chart Party's prime ministerial candidate, claims that politicians, even the People's Party, want to weaken "built-in safeguards against crooked types", in order "to protect corrupt politicians". He provides not a shred of substantiation for that claim.
It is known that the current charter, created at the behest of former Royal Thai Army General Prayut Chan-o-cha, who actually committed a coup against the Thai nation in order to force his agenda and charter on the people. Is that really a model of good ethics?
Meanwhile, on May 4, 2021, media, including this newspaper, reported that the Constitutional Court reportedly ruled that Capt Thamanat Prompow is qualified to be a member of parliament and a cabinet member regardless of his being sentenced to four years in prison in Australia in 1994. It must be wondered what Mr Jade thinks constitutes good ethics.
