As social critic Sulak Sivalak pointed out in an essay some time ago, Thai society has experienced modernisation without development, leaving many young people lonely, depressed and suicidal. The scourge of social media, with its mixed messages, and the imminent arrival of AI may intensify youth depression and other problems.

A senior and respected member of Thai society recently told me that the government in the early 2000s removed moral education and history from the high-school curriculum, with harmful consequences for young people.
