Saving barely pays

Re: "FETCO calls for higher savings rate to boost national growth", (Business, Sept 8).

Much-agreed savings is a critical part of any modern economy, and here it's lacking. But savings intermediation is the actual choice offered to savers.

Thai bank savings deposit rates have lingered around 0.3% for years, minus 15% tax.

Or just a small touch higher if one is willing to lock up for a period of time. Property overall seems oversupplied; besides being illiquid, it also requires a large amount of capital to start.
