More than 120,000 online scam complaints were lodged between January and April this year with financial losses estimated at 7.48 billion baht, the Anti-Cyber Scam Centre (ACSC) says.
Most of the complaints involved fraudulent sales of goods and services, accounting for 70% of all reported cases during the four-month period. On average, victims of these scams lost about 15,727 baht per transaction.
Investment scams were responsible for 5.99 billion baht in losses, or 80.2% of the total damage recorded. Victims of investment scams lost an average of 166,449 baht per case, nearly 10 times higher than the sales scam.
The third category, involving hacking, phishing and ransomware attacks, accounted for only 673 cases, or 0.55% of all complaints. Authorities described it as an "advanced threat" category because it caused the most serious average financial damage per victim at 211,686 baht per case.
