Miss World 2025 flashes 'brave heart', fights for women's health

Suchata “Opal” Chuangsri

At just 22, Suchata “Opal” Chuangsri, Miss World 2025 and a recipient of the Bangkok Post Woman of the Year 2026 honour, has transformed personal adversity into a national movement for women’s health.

Through her podcast Braveheart and her foundation “Opal for Her”, Ms Suchata has become a powerful voice in raising breast cancer awareness among young women — encouraging them to understand their risks, know their rights, and prioritise early detection to safeguard their quality of life.

At 16, Ms Suchata faced a frightening health crisis when large lumps — measuring up to 10 centimetres — were discovered in both breasts. She underwent surgery to remove the masses. Fortunately, the tumours were benign and had not progressed to cancer.

The experience proved life-changing. It deepened her resolve to use her public platform to address a critical issue she believes remains overlooked.

“Early diagnosis and accessible care are often out of reach. Support and treatment can come too late — or never at all.”

What began as a personal battle evolved into a mission to make breast cancer screening and care accessible to all women, particularly those in underserved communities.

Founded to promote breast cancer awareness and early detection, “Opal for Her” has already raised more than 1 million baht.

The initiative works closely with Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health, the National Cancer Institute, hospitals, private-sector partners, government agencies and non-profit organisations to strengthen breast cancer care systems nationwide.

In collaboration with the Kanjanabaramee Foundation, the programme supports royal public health initiatives under King Rama X, focusing on comprehensive cancer care across Thailand.

High-efficiency mobile mammography units — deployed with partners including Vejthani Hospital — now deliver free breast cancer screenings to underprivileged communities throughout the country.

Beyond screening, the campaign emphasises public education, prevention, and guidance on navigating treatment options — ensuring women are not only diagnosed early, but also supported through their healthcare journeys.

Ms Suchata’s advocacy is amplified by her historic achievements on the international stage. She became Thailand’s first-ever Miss World winner in the competition’s 72-year history when she claimed the crown at the 2025 edition on May 31 in Hyderabad, India.

Her pageant career began with Miss Rattanakosin, followed by Miss Universe Thailand 2022, where she was named Third Runner-up (later elevated to Second Runner-up). In 2024, she won the Miss Universe Thailand 2024 title before advancing to global recognition.

Fluent in Thai, English and Chinese, and standing 180cm tall, Ms Suchata entered the modelling industry before transitioning to pageantry. Currently a Political Science student majoring in International Relations at Thammasat University, she is widely recognised for her articulate communication style and global outlook.

Raised in Phuket and educated at Triam Udom Suksa School, Ms Suchata grew up in a family that runs a private business in Phuket Old Town. Her upbringing, academic path and lived health experience have shaped her belief that influence must be used for impact.

Today, as a Bangkok Post Woman of the Year, Opal represents what she calls the “Architects of New Power” — a generation of women redefining leadership through empathy, resilience and action.

Her crown may symbolise beauty and achievement, but her legacy is taking shape in hospital corridors, mobile screening units, and the lives of women empowered to seek care before it is too late.
