Sato San is the new rooftop bar, sitting atop Moxy Bangkok Ratchaprasong on the 32nd floor.

Soft-launched since New Year's Eve but officially launched this month, Sato San aims to offer something different for your night out with a chill-yet-vibrant vibe, a good view of the sunset on the cityscape and a menu that blends imbibing and eating (with an emphasis on the former).

As you may have guessed from its bilingual portmanteau name, Sato (Thai word for rice wine) San (a Japanese name affix) celebrates two rice cultures; the bold, fiery flavours of Isan and the refined elegance of Japan. Food-wise, you can expect authentic flavours with creative twists with extra attention on rice, fermentation, grilling and bold flavours, while, drink-wise, you expect creative concoctions stirred with inspirations from both cultures.

Your evening at Sato San starts with a sunset toast on the side of the rooftop bar that faces CentralWorld. Hot pink sofa cushions, pha khao ma throw pillows, lamp shades inspired by basketry and a neon-lit wooden arch over a DJ booth scream Isan electric. Sitting on the CentralWorld side, if you want liveliness, but head over to the opposite side if you want less decibel.

As I mentioned, the menu book is skewed toward the drinks section, leaving only a few pages for food but that doesn't mean there's nothing worth sinking your teeth into. You may notice familiar flavours, but they all come with some kind of twist. Crispy pork skin is served with pickle chilli instead of nam prik, for instance. Crispy rice popper is served with spicy mayonnaise and uses Japanese rice.

For raw delights, you may want to try Spicy tuna larb tartare or Tom yum tiger roll. Savour skewers include Salmon belly seasoned with spicy sauce and meaty Eggplant and shitake enhanced with teriyaki sauce.

From the large plate section, meat eaters should be pleased with the mighty Grilled striploin served with jaew dip, but also contains a hidden Japanese touch in the form of togarashi (seven-flavour chilli pepper) rub and yuzu kosho. Cured egg yolk is served on the side to add creaminess to this meaty equation. For spicy and savoury slurps, check out a bowl of Steamed clams.

For an indulgent end to the meal, Matcha tiramisu offers a moist green-tea soaked sponge while Apple Make A Wish offers a trio treat of apple mousse, white chocolate and raspberry puree.

Besides their five signature cocktails, Sato San offers Thai-Japanese inspired cocktails, highballs, Thai rice wines, classic cocktails, beers and other spirits by the glass or bottle. Come here with a big appetite for drinking and eating.
