Firefox has announced an extension of support for Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 until August 2026, delaying its previously planned end-of-life timeline for these ageing operating systems.
The move follows the earlier decision by Firefox to discontinue support for the platforms, but the company has now opted to prolong security updates and reassess the situation later next year.
Firefox had previously confirmed that version 115 ESR (Extended Support Release) would be the final version compatible with Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1, with security support initially set to end in February 2026.
However, in a recent update published on its official website, the company said it would extend security support for a further six months. As a result, Firefox 115 ESR will now receive updates until the end of August 2026.
The company added that it will review the situation again after the extended deadline before making any further decisions regarding continued support.
The extension reflects ongoing demand from users who still rely on older Windows systems. Despite their age, a notable number of users continue to run Firefox on these platforms and depend on regular security updates.
At present, Firefox 115 ESR remains the only major browser version that still supports Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1.
Nevertheless, Firefox warned that if no further extension is granted beyond August 2026, users may need to upgrade their operating systems to continue receiving security updates and access to new features in future releases.
