The Bhumjaithai Party of caretaker Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has won 174 House constituency seats, followed by the People's Party with 87 and 58 for the Pheu Thai Party, according to the Election Commission.
The unofficial vote result dashboard of the EC reported the results after 94% of ballots was counted at 3.57am on Monday. There are 400 House seats for constituency MPs.
The Klatham Party came fourth with 56 House seats for constituency MPs. Fifth was the Democrat Party with 10 House seats for constituency MPs.
The People’s Party won all 33 seats in Bangkok, all eight seats in Nonthaburi immediately north of Bangkok and seven out of eight seats in Samut Prakan immediately south of Bangkok. Bhumjaithai won the eighth seat in Samut Prakan.
Pheu Thai lost in all 10 constituencies of Chiang Mai province, which had long been its political stronghold.
In the parly-list contest for 100 House seats the People’s Party emerged on top with 9.73 million votes, followed by 5.93 million votes for Bhumjaithai, 5.13 million for Pheu Thai and 3.63 million for the Democrats.
When estimations of both constituency and list MP results are combined, Bhumjaithai is likely to have 194 House seats, followed by the People's Party with 116 and Pheu Thai 76. Analysts expected Bhumjaithai to form the next coalition with Klatham. The two parties were coalition partners in the previous government.
The Feb 8 general election also included a referendum on whether there should be a new constitution. A majority of 60%, or 19.86 million voters, wanted a new charter while 10.48 million voters (32%) voted against it. About 2.88 million voters had no opinion.
Voter turnout on Sunday was about 64%.
In the 2023 general election, the People's Party in its previous incarnation as the Move Forward Party won 151 House seats, followed by Pheu Thai with 141 and Bhumjaithai with 71 seats.
